Shibuya and Sapporo Forge Alliance to Boost Startup Ecosystems

Shibuya, Tokyo and Sapporo, Hokkaido have created a startup ecosystem partnership. The two cities will collaborate in sharing startup support sites and human resources, taking advantage of the strengths of both regions to foster further innovation.

Sapporo’s unique features — such as farmland, rocket launch sites, AI development hubs, and snowy, cold regions — play counterpoint to Shibuya’s world-renowned urban culture and infrastructure. By blending Sapporo’s natural surroundings with Shibuya’s role as a hub for startup support, we foresee a flourishing business ecosystem and an uptick in the flow of people between the two cities.

Whether a Shibuya-based drone company seeking open areas as a testing site or a Hokkaido agricultural startup that wants to set up a proof-of-concept urban agriculture location in the largest urban area on the planet, the Shibuya-Sapporo partnership aims to foster a spirit of mutual support and benefit that complements each location’s strengths.

●Proposed Initiatives

Women’s Entrepreneurship Support Program: Collaboration with the Tokyo Women in VC, a community organization of female investors, to provide mentoring to female entrepreneurs in each region and facilitate event exchanges.

Collaboration: Supporting collaboration between startups across both regions, complementing each other’s unique strengths specific to local and urban areas.

Investor Events: Introducing venture capital from Shibuya to Sapporo and hosting startup pitches.
